Our labor-intensive completely hand made mosaic process, was invented by Heide Hatry 10 years ago: the individual ash particles are first separated into different shades of grey and them embedded meticulously, one by one, into a surface of warm beeswax (similar to the way the individual pixels contribute to complete images on a computer). If there is too little variety of grey particles, we add coal and white marble dust. Through several delicate layers of application, a rich and textured likeness is achieved.
