The Oseberg Burial Ship

In 1904, Gabriel Gustafson, a professor of the University Museum of National Antiquities in Oslo, excavated the Oseberg burial ship from a burial mound in the Oslofjord area in Norway. The ship, which dates back to AD 834, is extraordinarily well preserved. The archaeological findings were even more surprising when they found that the grave chamber on deck housed a double female inhumation, instead of the more common single man burial. Among the recovered artifacts were empty chests, several textiles, and everyday objects such as kitchen utensils.
